Mangroves sequester 14% of global carbon, despite covering only 0.5% of total coastal areas. They exhibit the highest carbon sequestration rates compared to all other terrestrial or marine ecosystems and contribute disproportionately to carbon storage (Alongi, 2014). 8,000 planted mangroves sequester approximately 50 tons of CO₂ per year, and thus at least 1,250 tons over their lifetime. Mangroves absorb four times more carbon dioxide than typical forests and also provide shelter for small marine life, such as fish and crustaceans, as well as birds. In this way, the beauty of nature from within and the original abundance and diversity of our oceans are to be restored.
